About

Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1851, Saint Joseph's University advances the professional and personal ambitions of men and women by providing a demanding, yet supportive educational experience. One of only 139 schools nationwide with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter and AACSB business school accreditation, Saint Joseph's is home to 4,200 full-time undergraduates and 3,100 graduate, part-time and doctoral candidates.

Saint Joseph's University challenges its students to exceed their highest ambitions, fosters the mature development of values and deepens a desire to help shape the world. The Jesuit tradition of cura personalis — care of the person — is reflected in the University's rigorous academic experience; its energetic, compassionate and spiritual campus; and a pervasive focus on the common good.

SPIRIT

Saint Joseph's students engage enthusiastically in all facets of campus life – academic, social, athletic, ethical and spiritual. Their active participation creates a vibrant, dynamic campus community. In all their activities, students emphasize personal integrity as well as a respect and concern for others. This produces a mutually supportive, humane and tolerant environment for individual success and service to others.

Because of its location, Saint Joseph's has lifelong ties to the people, professional opportunities and culture of Philadelphia. Students enjoy direct access to internships, cooperative programs and positions in virtually all careers, most of which have a major presence in the region, which is the hub of the Northeast corridor. In addition, there are ample outlets for community involvement and service learning. Students also take part in Philadelphia's big-time sports, entertainment and historical events.

INTELLECT

Steeped in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition, Saint Joseph's provides a rigorous, intense education that both disciplines and expands the mind. Students develop a lifelong desire to learn and grow while also acquiring skills and knowledge necessary for success in their professional lives. At the core of this education is a General Education Requirement, which exposes students to primary fields of inquiry and the cultural values that shape our world. A Jesuit emphasis on engaged teaching and mentoring permeates the University. Faculty at Saint Joseph's, many of whom are leading scholars in their disciplines, expect students to perform at the highest level and set demanding standards in the classroom and out.

Saint Joseph's is at the forefront of utilizing innovative technologies to enhance and promote learning. These technologies are widely integrated into the educational process both in class and beyond, where they are also used for individual and collaborative research projects. By mastering these tools and achieving technological fluency, Saint Joseph's students gain a valuable edge in their careers.

Beyond campus, Saint Joseph's has extension programs with universities and other institutions in Asia, Australia, Europe and Latin America. Saint Joseph's also offers a variety of graduate and executive programs and is home to several independent academic centers, including the Institute for Violence Research and Prevention, the Center for Food Marketing, the Faith-Justice Institute and the Early Responders Distance Learning Center. The Scholars Conference on the Holocaust and The Churches meets annually on the Saint Joseph's campus. Such programs and activities enrich the University's intellectual life, open up opportunities for specialized study and engage students with important issues in the wider world.
